Editor’s Note: My Buckhannon freelance writer Lily Hicks is following along with the 2025–2026 class of Leadership Upshur, a professional development program designed for individuals who live or work in and around Upshur County, West Virginia.
Although I wasn’t able to attend this month’s Leadership Upshur session, my classmates made it clear I missed an unforgettable day in Charleston. The group spent the day at the heart of state government, hearing from inspiring leaders who are shaping the future of West Virginia.
This session featured a full lineup of speakers whose careers span public service, business, and leadership development. Fellows heard from Melanie Pagliaro, Director of the County Commissioners’ Association of West Virginia (CCAWV), who spoke on the power of collaboration and the importance of working together to make things happen. Ashton Bias Harrell, Bar Admissions Administrator at the Supreme Court of Appeals, shared a powerful message about gratitude, reminding participants that true leadership begins with appreciation and humility.
Steve Roberts, Director of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, offered insight into strengthening the state’s workforce pipeline, while Jen Willits, Executive Director of Leadership West Virginia, discussed how real leadership isn’t about authority but influence, lifting others up and serving the people around you.
Later in the day, Morgan Robinson of Focus Media Marketing shared practical advice on personal branding and the importance of building authentic professional networks. Fellows also had the opportunity to hear directly from Secretary of State Kris Warner and State Treasurer Larry Pack, who both emphasized their dedication to serving the people of West Virginia and their optimism for the state’s future.
For many participants, the visit to the Capitol was a highlight of the day. Fellow Robynn Shannon described the experience as “truly awe-inspiring.”
“I had never been inside the Capitol building before, and it was incredible to be in the place where the people’s business is conducted,” Shannon said. “I especially appreciated hearing the Secretary of State and State Treasurer talk about their commitment to serving the people of West Virginia and describing the work of their offices.”
“I loved hearing Secretary Warner and Treasurer Pack speak,” fellow Becky Perry added. “It’s exciting to see them working together toward a common goal, keeping younger generations in West Virginia and focusing on opportunities for 25- to 40-year-olds in our beautiful state.”
The day in Charleston served as both a lesson in leadership and a reminder of what’s possible when people across sectors come together with a shared purpose. While I wasn’t there in person, it’s clear that this second session offered a powerful glimpse into how state leaders are striving to make West Virginia an even better place to live and work.
As Leadership Upshur continues, I’m looking forward to joining my classmates again soon and hearing firsthand how these lessons in leadership take root right here in our own community.
