WESTON, W.Va. – Pulmonary Rehabilitation makes a tremendous difference in the lives of the patients who suffer from pulmonary disease.

The staff at Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH) and Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital understand with their impact in patients’ lives and will be celebrating their specialty during Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week (March 14-20).

The event is designed to educate communities about the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with lung disease. “Breathe Easy” is the theme for 2021.

The SJMH program was started in 2005 and the current staff includes: Nurse Manager Kristi Gannon; Peggy Burkhammer; Susan Carpenter; Tiffany Lowther, RN; Cassandra Hinzman; Tammy Clark, RN; and Marion Bennett RN.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation staff works with patients suffering with chronic lung disease, who suffer both physically and psychologically with the illness. The hospital staff help those patients to return to a healthier and satisfying lifestyle.

The program provides a comprehensive approach to patient care, including education about pulmonary diseases, lifestyle changes, incorporation of mild physical activity, and handling the psychological effects of a patient’s condition. The program is customized to meet the patient’s needs under the medical direction of Dr. Frank Scattaregia.

The ultimate goal of the program is to rehabilitate the patient to his or her maximum potential and reduce the number of life-threatening respiratory occurrences or hospitalizations. Family members are welcome to participate in the treatment program and learn how to support the patient.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), aims to educate the community about the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with chronic lung disease.
