Power outage affects over 1,100 households in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON — More than 1,100 households in Upshur County were left without power Wednesday night after an electrical event caused several power lines at the bottom of St. Joseph’s Hospital Hill to fracture and fall.

Power went out for more than 1,100 households in the city and throughout the county around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, including West Buckhannon. In the downtown area, Route 20 appeared to be the dividing line. Looking south from the courthouse, locations east of Route 20 had power, while those to the west did not.

Buckhannon mayor Robbie Skinner said Mon Power crews were arriving on scene just before 10 p.m. to begin to fix several downed power lines that are fractured.

Skinner told My Buckhannon that two or three power lines were laying on the ground in the street at the bottom of the hill leading up to St. Joseph’s Hospital across from Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He said the Buckhannon Fire and Police Departments were on scene.

In a Facebook post just before 10 p.m., Skinner advised residents to avoid West Main Street.

“Mon Power crews are on scene,” Skinner wrote in the social media post. “They’re assessing the lines both above and below where the lines are fractured. As soon as they have an estimated time of repair, they will let me know.”

Power crews were also seen working in the alley behind Community Bank.

Many residents, including My Buckhannon founder Brian Bergstrom, witnessed a series of green and blue explosions in the area of West Lincoln and West Main streets shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., power was restored.
