Opal L. George

Opal L. George, 101, of Buckhannon, W.Va., passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 19, 2019, in her daughter Sandy’s arms.

She was born August 25, 1918, in Barbour Co., W.Va., a daughter of the late Thomas B. and Mary Katherine Summerfield Lantz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest T. George.

Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Brake of Henderson, S.C., Melva Michaels of Beaumont, Calif. and Sandy Marple and husband Craig of Hackers Creek, W.Va.; one son, Sam George of Techachapi, Calif.; four grandsons, Robert Mader of Ore., Richie Brake of Ohio, Cliff Crites of Ariz. and Greg Jack of Fla.; six granddaughters, Melissa Brake of Ohio, Karen Richmond of S.C., Jordan Zimmerman of Ariz., Kimberly Smith and Johnna Courtney both of Buckhannon and Caysie George of Moorefield, W.Va.; six great-grandsons, Michael and Chris McClung both of Ohio, Kyle Crites of Calif., Jaxton Smith of Buckhannon, Nathan Tolliver of Charleston, W.Va. and Aiden Courtney of Volga, W.Va.; two great-granddaughters, Raven Crites of Calif. and Justice Courtney of Buckhannon; four great-great-grandchildren; four nephews; one niece and numerous friends.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Clifton George; one grandson, Mark Jack; three brothers, Franklin, Jennings and Robert Lantz; one sister, Clara Warner; two nephews and her companion, Bill Maynard.

Mrs. George was an avid rabbit and squirrel hunter to keep food on the table for her family and would always say, “Sandy eat your chicken” in reference to the squirrel and rabbit. She loved traveling and going out to eat with Sandy and her kids and was a Methodist by faith. We were so blessed to have the most wonderful, kindhearted mother and grandmother in our lives for so many years. We will still cherish you until we meet you on the other side.

Friends will be received Thursday, November 21, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wease L. Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery in Buckhannon, W.Va.
