One person killed in fatal Bull Run wreck on Thanksgiving Day

BUCKHANNON – One person died from injuries suffered in a Thanksgiving Day wreck that happened just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

According to a press release issued by investigating officer Cpl. V.J. Pyles with the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police, at about 12:45 p.m., Pyles responded to a single-vehicle crash on Bull Run Road, about 0.5 miles from Stone Coal Road in Upshur County.

When Pyles arrived on scene, he learned one of the three occupants was trapped inside the vehicle and had died from injuries suffered as a result of the crash. The other two occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by Upshur EMS to WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

According to a WVSP press release, “crews from Buckhannon Fire Department, Upshur EMS, State Medical Examiner’s Officer, and Adrian Volunteer Fire Department remained on scene for an extended period to extricate the deceased from the vehicle.”

Based on a preliminary investigation, Pyles believes the vehicle had been traveling north on Bull Run Road towards Stone Coal Road when it attempted to negotiate a “rutted-out muddy portion of roadway.” The vehicle subsequently lost control, slid to the left and rolled over an embankment into a small stream, the press release says. The vehicle came to rest on its top in approximately 12 inches of fast-moving water, according to Pyles.

The name of the person who died in the wreck won’t be released at this time because not all family members have been notified. Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputy Seth Cutright assisted the WVSP with the investigation at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
