Number of COVID-19 cases in West Virginia tops 2,000 on Sunday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Sunday that 21 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, taking the overall total past the 2,000 mark.

No additional deaths were attributed to the disease on Sunday.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on May 31, 2020, there have been 97,622 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 2,010 total cases and 75 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Sunday in Berkeley, Cabell, Fayette, Hampshire, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, Mineral, Mingo, Ohio, Randolph and Wayne counties.

About 632 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 1,303 people have recovered and 75 have died, a mortality rate of about 5.4 percent.
