Number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia tops 7,000 for first time since February

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 479 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (3), Barbour (2), Lewis (2) and Randolph (4) counties.

A total of 37 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 62-year old male from Brooke County and a 73-year old female from Nicholas County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 9, 2021, there have been 2,530,726 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 145,299 total cases and 2,737 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 7,084 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 135,478 people have recovered and 2,737 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.7%.

A total of 433,823 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
