Number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia drops below 6,000 on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 5,937 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 381 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (114), Barbour (46), Lewis (57), Randolph (79) and Webster (24) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 20 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR, including a 66-year old male from Ohio County, a 54-year old female from Raleigh County, and a 68-year old male from Braxton County; as well as new deaths reported as a result of the Bureau for Public Health’s continuing data reconciliation with the official death certificate are a 55-year old male from Barbour County, a 59-year old male from Tyler County, a 72-year old female from Fayette County, a 76-year old male from Raleigh County, an 87-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Preston County, a 68-year old male from Raleigh County, a 72-year old female from Kanawha County, a 76-year old male from Morgan County, a 70-year old male from Harrison County, an 80-year old female from Roane County, a 78-year old female from Grant County, an 87-year old female from Berkeley County, an 87-year old female from Preston County, an 82-year old male from Mason County, a 91-year old male from Ohio County, and a 68-year old male from Wyoming County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of November 9, 2021, there are currently 5,937 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 20 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,568 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 544 residents are hospitalized with the virus (76% unvaccinated, 24% vaccinated), with 190 currently in intensive care (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated) and 94 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 16.23%.

A total of 926,819 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 52% of the state.
