Number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia drops below 2,000 for first time since last August

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 1,957 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 126 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (26), Barbour (7), Lewis (2), Randolph (115) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of four active cases in the last 24 hours.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease in the last 24 hours, according to the DHHR – a 68-year old female from Cabell County and a 73-year old male from Raleigh County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of June 23, 2021, there have been 2,982,657 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 163,689 total cases and 2,872 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 1.62%.

A total of 810,708 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 45% of the state.
