Number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia continues to fall

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 3,045 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 294 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (57), Barbour (44), Lewis (39), Randolph (21) and Webster (25) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases over the weekend.

Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 83-year old male from Wetzel County, a 42-year old male from Nicholas County, an 84-year old male from Wood County, a 95-year old male from Raleigh County, a 60-year old male from Raleigh County, a 95-year old female from Kanawha County, a 79-year old female from Mingo County, an 81-year old male from Wood County, and a 62-year old male from Kanawha County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 28, 2022, there are currently 3,045 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been nine deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,317 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 577 residents are hospitalized with the virus (63% unvaccinated, 37% vaccinated), with 129 currently in intensive care (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated) and 74 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 9.20%. 

A total of 961,779 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 411,015 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
