No. 8 Lady Bucs lead start to finish in 66-37 win over Indians

TENNERTON – The eighth-ranked Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs played a near-flawless game against the 13th-ranked Bridgeport Indians in a 66-37 victory Tuesday night at the high school.

The Lady Bucs led from start to finish against their sectional foe with Shelby McDaniels leading the way with 20 points and seven rebounds.

“This was one of the more complete games we have played all year,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “We shared the ball really well, we knocked down our shots and defensively we did a good job of slowing them down. We really got off on the right foot and never let up.”

Bridgeport’s best player, Gabby Reep, managed 16 points, but the B-U defense limited her to a 5-for-21 night from the floor including going 0-for-9 from behind the three-point stripe.

“We did a good job of slowing her down and challenging most of her shots,” stated Kittle.

The win also secured home court for the Lady Bucs in both the sectional opener and the sectional championship if they make it to the title game as the victory tonight gave them a perfect 3-0 mark against Bridgeport, Preston and University in sectional action.

“It’s huge to get home court for sectionals,” commented Kittle. “These girls have never hosted a sectional game, but when we were going to Charleston everything came through here. We need to protect it now and take care of business.”

Leading 6-4, Kyndal Davis put in a jumper in the paint and Alyssa Abel made a lay-up to give the Lady Bucs a 10-4 advantage with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

A Gabby Parke three-pointer gave the Lady Bucs a 13-6 advantage and McDaniels wrapped up the first-quarter scoring with a lay-up to treat B-U to a 17-9 lead after eight minutes of action.

McDaniels started the second quarter with a trey and Kenna Maxwell unleashed a three-pointer a minute later to give the Lady Bucs a 23-13 lead.

Up 31-19, McDaniels put in six straight points to give the Lady Bucs a 37-19 advantage.

Buckhannon-Upshur took a 37-21 advantage into the break.

Following an Emily Anderson basket by Bridgeport to start the third quarter, the Lady Bucs went on a 9-0 run for a 46-23 lead.

Leading 48-27, Olivia Ellis closed out the third-quarter scoring for B-U with a three-pointer and a lay-up making it a 53-27 contest heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bucs began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run for their biggest lead of the game, 35 points, at 62-27.

Parke put in a lay-up to give the Lady Bucs a 66-32 lead with 3:41 remaining before Bridgeport ended the game on a 5-0 run.

B-U shot the ball at 48.2 percent hitting on 27 of their 56 shot attempts.

“We really thought we could open up some lanes and penetrate on them,” remarked Kittle. “The girls really executed well. When they went to the 1-2-2 defense, they left the high post open and we were able to take advantage of that. I couldn’t be happier with the way we played tonight.”

Trailing McDaniels in the scoring column for the Lady Bucs were Abel with 13 points and Parke and Currence with nine each.

Bridgeport, who was 0-13 from behind the three-point arc, dropped to 6-8 on the season.

The Lady Bucs improved to 13-3 on the year and will return to action Thursday at Lewis County.

The game will tip at 7:30 p.m.
