Musician’s Health and Wellness Retreat and 5K Planned at Pioneer Stage

GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State College’s Bluegrass Music Education Center, Pioneer Stage, will host a Musician’s Health and Wellness Retreat, as well as a “Boogie for Bluegrass 5K Walk/Run,” on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25. The event coincides with GSC’s alumni weekend.

The Musician’s Health and Wellness Retreat will include a series of workshops on nutrition, good posture, weightlifting, and making healthy choices. Blood pressure screenings, yoga sessions, and a chiropractor and massage therapist will be available as well. The workshops aim to promote good health, particularly to musicians, but are open to everyone. Admission is free.

The workshops will begin with a health and wellness luncheon for Honor Band students with
Dr. Megan Darby and the GSC music faculty and alumni from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., a nutrition, exercise, and sleep panel with GSC athletics staff from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m., a posture and mental health workshop with Dr. Kevin McKee from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m., and a musician’s lifestyle Q&A with GSC music faculty and students from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Minnie Hamilton Health System will provide blood pressure, body mass index, and lipid panel screenings from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The evening will consist of yoga sessions from 5:00 – 5:45 p.m. and 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. and massage therapist and chiropractor demonstrations from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Following the evening workshops will be a concert featuring GSC alumni George Ward and Buddy Griffin at 8:00 p.m. at the Pioneer Stage. Admission to the concert is by donation.

Saturday morning, the “Boogie for Bluegrass 5K” will kick off with registration at 8:00 a.m. outside of the Pioneer Stage. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants will follow West Main Street to Sycamore Road, and then follow Sycamore Road to the Gilmer County Recreation Center playground before turning around and returning to the Pioneer Stage.

First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in each age category (15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, and 55+ years) following the race, including a first place medal for the overall winner. Children 14 years and under will receive a goodie bag for participating.

Registration for the 5K is $20 for adults and $15 for high school and college students. The deadline to register and receive a free shirt is Friday, April 17. Registration after April 17 will be $25 while shirts last. Shirts will be available for purchase without racing for $20.
