GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State University welcomed West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey to campus Wednesday, April 22, as he joined university leadership and state officials to celebrate a $5 million legislative grant aimed at strengthening rural healthcare and workforce development in West Virginia.
The funding, approved by the West Virginia Legislature, marks a significant step forward in expanding opportunities for students and addressing critical needs across the region.
“This support from the West Virginia Legislature is vital to our mission and the future of our state,” said Glenville State University President Mark A. Manchin. “By investing in programs like education and health sciences, we are building stronger, more resilient communities. Glenville State University is proud to play a role in preparing the next generation of leaders who will serve West Virginia.”
This funding will contribute to the completion of the formerly announced Morris Family Health and Fitness Complex. University leaders emphasized that the completed facility will play a key role in expanding academic programming, including future graduate-level offerings, while also enhancing healthcare training in rural areas.
“We envision over the next three to five years growing our programs, our master’s level programs, and ensuring that students trained here remain here to serve their communities,” Manchin said.
He noted that rural West Virginians face significantly higher mortality rates in emergency situations, underscoring the urgent need for accessible, high-quality healthcare training close to home.
Senate President Randy Smith attended the announcement and highlighted the broader impact of the investment in addressing workforce challenges.
“The more we can invest in programs like nursing, the more we can fill critical gaps in our workforce,” Smith said. “Education is key to building a stronger, more successful West Virginia.”
The university also expressed gratitude for continued legislative support that extends beyond this project. The additional funding will enhance academic programs, provide hands-on learning experiences and help address workforce shortages, particularly in rural healthcare and education.
