Children under the age of 18 are eligible to receive meals that will be delivered to bus stops and available for pickup at Upshur County schools beginning Monday.

“Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, school buses will be delivering breakfast to all bus stop locations between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.,” Upshur County Schools announced Friday evening. “Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, a prepared meal will be provided at each school each day from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Each school will have a designated location for meal pick up.”

All Upshur County students and children under the age of 18 are eligible to receive meals.

Governor Jim Justice ordered schools across West Virginia to close beginning Monday in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

“In response to Governor Justice’s announcement today regarding his planned statewide action to the Corona (Covid-19) Virus, Upshur County Schools will be closed for students indefinitely starting Monday, March 16,” the school system said Friday evening. “Students will return to school at the direction of Governor Justice and the W.Va. Department of Education.

Teachers and staff will report to help and deliver prepare meals, develop teaching instructions for the break and complete a deep clean of each school.

“All teachers and staff will be reporting for work on Monday to assist with preparations of student food service options, to develop and communicate classwork expectations to parents and students, as well as to complete ongoing deep cleaning efforts within our schools,” Upshur County Schools announced. “More specific guidelines will be communicated using the automated calling system, the Upshur County Schools website and Facebook site.”

All sports will be suspended and community groups will not be able to use school facilities.

“Based on directives from the W.Va. Secondary Schools Athletic Commission (WVSSAC), all school-related athletic programs are not permitted to practice or compete until further notice,” the announcement read. “The WVSSAC will consider restoration on April 10. In addition, no community group activities will be permitted in school facilities until further notice. We appreciate your patience as this situation is constantly evolving.”
