Local youth softball team finds success this fall

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur U-11 softball team just finished up their fall season with a 9-5 record.

The team was coached by Levi Bender, the current head coach of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc program.

The squad was led at the plate by Braylea Squires, who compiled a red-hot .632 average with 12 hits in 19 at-bats.

Haylee McQuain also hit over the .600 mark with a .611 average with 11 hits in 18 at bats.

Four other players hit over .500 on the team — Charity Talbott (.583), Payton Brown (.579), Bristol Zirkle (.545) and Madelyn Tucker (.538).

“We were pleasantly surprised that we had 18 plus girls that wanted to play softball this fall,” said Bender. “The girls ranged from third to sixth graders. They were different levels of experience but every girl improved in a variety of aspects within the game. I hope each of the players took something from this season. I hope that their love of the game grew and I will look for them to improve throughout the coming years. The future is very bright for softball in Upshur County.”

Team members consisted of Madelyn Bennett, Payton Brown, Shannon Cartwright, Isabella Casey, Rylee Chapman, Sophia Kesling, Makenna Marsh, Adelaide McVey, Halee McQuain, Kolbi Orr, Janessa Smith, Braylea Squires, MacKenzie Strickland, Charity Talbott, Madelyn Tucker, Madalynn Winans, Jaylee Wayts and Bristol Zirkle.
