Larry Edgar Abel

Larry Edgar Abel, 74, of Rock Cave, traveled to God’s fishing hole on Thursday, February 18, 2021. He passed surrounded by loving family and in the comfort of his son’s home in West Mifflin, Pa.

He was born in Buckhannon on December 31, 1946, a son of the late Albert Leroy and Mary Pearl Reese Abel. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Abel.

Forever cherishing their memories of Larry’s outgoing nature are four children: Terry Abel of West Mifflin, Pa., Wendy Abel of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas Abel of West Mifflin, Pa., and David Abel and wife, Crystal, of Buckhannon; seven grandchildren: Darion, Charity, Donovan, Zackery, Jadah, Jeffrey, and Grayson; one great-grandchild, Lillian Winneberger; ten siblings: Jerry Abel and wife, Sharlette, Roger Abel and wife, Elizabeth, and Stephen Abel and wife, Linda, all of Buckhannon, Barbara Reger and husband, James, of North Carolina, Philip Abel and wife, Twila, of Buckhannon, Mary Beth Edmiston and husband, Bob, of North Carolina, Daniel Abel and wife, Rebecca, of Morgantown, Diana Abel of North Carolina, Robert Abel of Buckhannon, and Joseph Abel and wife, Kim, of Florida; life partner, Kathy Horn; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1964 and was Christian by faith. He joined the United States Air Force and served his country proudly for four years during the Vietnam War. After discharge, Larry spent over 24 years in the highway construction industry. A large part of his career was spent with Hardaway Construction which was based in Georgia. Larry loved being outdoors in the Wild and Wonderful West Virginia and frequently spent his time hunting and trout fishing. His sarcastic sense of humor made him a joy to be around and caused people to gravitate toward him. Larry never met a stranger and often became friends with everyone he met. His favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren who held the key to his heart.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required indoors. Family and friends will gather for Visitation at Clutter Funeral and Cremation located at 21 Elnora Circle in Buckhannon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2021. Funeral Services will begin at 1 p.m. in the Clutter Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wease Day officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the Upshur County Honor Guard. Following services, Larry’s request for Cremation will be honored.
