A juvenile female has been arrested and charged with felony terroristic threats after a list of approximately 34 sixth-grade students was AirDropped to devices at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School on Friday morning, according to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies and PRO Officers T.A. Menendez and B.K. Wright were notified at approximately 8 a.m. on Friday, February 13, that several children had received messages via AirDrop while waiting in the gymnasium for the school day to begin. The message contained a list of approximately 34 students described as a “shooters list.” All 34 children named on the list are students at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School.
Because the school day had not yet officially started, students were still in possession of their phones, and the list was quickly spread among other students. The principal contacted the Chief Security Officer for Upshur County schools, and an investigation was launched.
Officers concluded their investigation and obtained a confession from the suspect, identified as a juvenile female. The incident caused widespread panic within the community, and numerous parents arrived at the school, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
The juvenile was arrested for felony terroristic threats. Following a detention hearing, she was transported to a detention facility to await future court action.
