Joyce “Josh” Small

Joyce “Josh” Small, 87, of Buckhannon, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born in Narrows, Va., on November 14, 1932, a son of the late Valley and Coachie Boswell Small.

On April 16, 1953, he married the woman he would spend his life with, Mavis O. Ware. After her passing on September 29, 2014, Joyce missed her dearly. They have now been reunited to share eternity together.

Josh is survived by two sons: Tommy Small and wife, Wilma, and David Small and wife, Sandra, all of Buckhannon; three daughters: Sandy Reed and husband, John, of Buckhannon, Linda Sue Small of Princeton, and Coachie Ball and husband, Scott, of Buckhannon; three step-sons: Raymond McCartney Jr. and wife, Phylis, of Buckhannon, Eugene McCartney of French Creek, and Alva “Bobby” McCartney and companion, Patty, of Jane Lew; one step-daughter, Debra Harrison and husband, Frank, of Buckhannon; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Marsh Small  and wife Bertha, Richard Small and Dick Small and wife Mary all of Buckhannon; two sisters:  Stella Fortney of North Carolina and Flossie Small of Buckhannon;  and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Josh was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Huey Small; one sister-in-law Wanita Small and one brother-in-law James Fortney.

Josh was a self-employed man for fifty years. He started and owned Smalls Paving Company. He also enjoyed horse-trading. Above all, Josh was a dedicated family man. He treasured his time spent with family and especially enjoyed playing with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather for visitation at Tomblyn-Clutter Funeral and Cremation located at 21 Elnora Circle in Buckhannon from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Tomblyn-Clutter Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dennis Estes officiating. Interment will follow at Upshur County Memorial Park in Buckhannon.
