BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Buccaneers dropped their first two outings of the year last week.
They opened their season at home last Thursday with a 7-0 setback to Robert C. Byrd and then went to Bridgeport Saturday and dropped a 6-1 decision to John Marshall.
The Bucs closest outing against Robert C. Byrd was a 9-7 loss by Bradly Helmick and Tommy Swift at No. 2 doubles.
“The boys inexperience really showed in our opener,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “The game is a lot faster at the varsity level than any of them have experienced before. The serve, it just takes time to get used to and the top RCB boys had some decent serves so we had trouble getting a racket on it and getting it back across the net. I’m proud that we are giving effort and not giving up but we have a lot of growing and learning to do this season.”
Against John Marshall, the lone win belonged to Cody Trainer and Jacob Ham defeating Lorenzo Miller and Ashley Butler by an 8-4 score at No. 3 doubles.
“I thought our boys played better Saturday in some miserable weather,” stated Rock. “We are working on getting more consistent with our shots and moving better to be in position to hit cleaner shots. It was great for Cody and Jacob to get a win at No. 3 doubles for our first victory. Also, every boy at least won a game in singles so that was nice.”
The Bucs were slated to meet Wheeling Park on Monday.
They will visit University on Tuesday and then host Lewis County on Wednesday.
