History Bowl Legends Tournament to debut for West Virginia Day celebration

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice, with the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH), announce a new History Bowl Legends Tournament to debut on June 20, 2022, during the state’s annual West Virginia Day celebration at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.

This inaugural tournament will begin at 2 p.m. and will feature winners from previous West Virginia State History Bowl competitions. Eight all-star teams will compete for bragging rights to see who remains the most knowledgeable on the history of the Mountain Stat

The West Virginia History Bowl competition began in 2010 under the direction of Curator Randall Reid-Smith. The program has grown from just 18 teams with one tournament to annual participation of 500+ eighth-graders from all 55 West Virginia counties at eight regional tournaments, a wild card play-in tournament, and a state championship event.

Teams are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and the first eight teams to apply will compete in the tournament. For more information and to register, go to https://wvculture.org/event/history-bowl-legends-tournament/ or contact Matt McGrew, History Bowl coordinator, at Matt.McGrew@wv.gov.
