Gov. Justice announces State of Emergency for all 55 counties due to dangerous drought conditions

U.S. Drought Monitor

CHARLESTON, WV — Governor Jim Justice has declared a State of Emergency for all 55 West Virginia counties, including Upshur, due to severe drought conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor has confirmed that the entire state is experiencing a range of extreme, severe, and moderate drought conditions.

“This drought has plagued West Virginia farmers, putting them at risk of losing everything,” Justice said. “We cannot and will not stand by and watch our hardworking farmers suffer from this severe lack of rain.”

Justice emphasized that the Emergency Management Division is actively seeking disaster assistance for those impacted.

“We understand the immense stress and hardship this drought has caused. Right now, our Emergency Management Division is working tirelessly to secure disaster assistance for those in need. Until then, we are committed to doing everything we can to support our agricultural community during this challenging time,” he said.

The proclamation activates the Emergency Operations Plan, mobilizing personnel and resources to respond swiftly to any emergencies. It also grants the Director of the West Virginia Emergency Management Division specific administrative powers to ensure efficient delivery of essential emergency services.

The State of Emergency will remain in effect for thirty days unless terminated earlier by another proclamation. For more details, click here to view the full proclamation.
