GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The first Cassie Johnson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Glenville State College (GSC) Criminal Justice student Kristen Lopez.
The Glenville State College Department of Criminal Justice began fundraising for the Cassie Johnson Memorial Scholarship – in memory of Charleston Police Officer Cassie Johnson – as part of the College’s Day of Giving campaign in February of this year. Plans are to eventually endow the scholarship, which is to be awarded annually to a Criminal Justice major at Glenville State. Patrolman Johnson was killed in the line of duty in December 2020.
Lopez joined members of the Johnson family, the College’s criminal justice faculty, and Charleston Police Chief Sgt. Tyke Hunt for a scholarship presentation ceremony in late April at Charleston City Hall.
“Being able to receive this scholarship, it is so inspirational to me and so important to me. It was awesome to be able to come meet Cassie’s family and be able to tell her mom and sister thank you,” said Lopez.
Majoring in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Field Forensics, Lopez hails from Rio Rancho, New Mexico and is also a member of the Glenville State Women’s Soccer team.
