Gilsie Lura Tenney

Gilsie Lura Tenney, 102, of the Selbyville Road, went peacefully to her heavenly home on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a brief illness. 

She was born on February 10, 1917, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Harriet Pringle Russell. On July 5, 1936, she married Oral Simmons, who preceded her in death on December 24, 1958. 

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was also preceded in death by two former husbands:  Oliver Carpenter and Straud Tenney; four children: Wilma Jean Woody, George Simmons, Anna Belle Lane, and Donald Simmons; two grandchildren: Robbie Simmons and Terry Lane; one great grandchild Chris Woody; four sisters: Stella Russell, Lena Tenney, Thelma Marsh, and Irene Tenney; four brothers:  Harold, Eugene, Darrell, and Claude Russell.

Gilsie was the last member of her immediate family.

She is survived by three daughters: Patty and husband Doyle Gillum, Mary Ann and husband Larry Coe, and Charolet Peck; son-in-law Fred Woody; twenty-three grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.          

Gilsie was a homemaker and loved to make quilts and to grow a garden.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Community Church.

Friends will be received at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 24, 2020, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. — the funeral hour, with Pastor Will Kerns officiating.  Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
