Football ‘Cats get blanked by Charleston, 44-0

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan football team (1-8, 1-7) dropped a 44-0 home game to Charleston (5-4, 5-3) on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon at Cebe Ross Field.

WVWC Leaders
Wide receiver Devin Washington logged a game-high 73 receiving yards and had 117 all-purpose yards, including a 36-yard kick return. Defensively, Wesleyan had three players record double-digit tackle totals. Deontre Logan led the pack with 12 stops and two tackles for a loss. Ely Ghameshlougy captured 11 tackles while Michael Breedlove racked up 10 stops. Dequandre Edwards and Jaden Swiger each recorded a sack.

Charleston Leaders
Javonte Howard led three UC quarterbacks with 130 yards through the air. Davis Black threw the game’s lone touchdown pass to Chavon Wright. Wright led the Golden Eagles with 126 yards on the ground and three rushing scores. Tae Marrero hauled in three receptions for 73 yards. Willie Floyd led the defensive unit with seven tackles.

Inside the First Half
The Bobcats failed to convert a 4th and 5 at the Charleston 47-yard line on the opening drive of the game. The Golden Eagles capitalized on the favorable field position and scored six points from an 11-play, 53-yard drive that ended with a Wright one-yard touchdown rush. Following a WVWC three-and-out, Charleston successfully found the end zone on a six-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a Wright 20-yard scamper. UC led by a pair of scores after the first quarter of play.

The Golden Eagles scored their third touchdown of the first half after amassing a 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive that drained 6:33 off the clock. Wright found paydirt for the third time after a 23-yard gain on 3rd and 16. The visitors held a 21-0 advantage after 30 minutes of play.

Inside the Second Half
Black completed a nine-yard pass to Wright on the first drive of the second half that opened up a 28-0 lead for UC. A Tim McCutchen kick pinned Wesleyan on its own one-yard line. Richard Souffrant stuffed the Bobcats for a safety that increased Charleston’s margin to 30 points. On the ensuing UC drive, Black rushed 11 yards and put UC ahead 37-0 heading into the final quarter. Josh Brown scored the game’s final touchdown, which was an 18-yard carry for six points. UC came away with a road victory at Cebe Ross Field.

West Virginia Wesleyan will play its final game of the season at Ross Field next Saturday (Nov. 5) versus Frostburg State. The senior day contest will begin at 1 p.m. from Buckhannon.
