BUCKHANNON — The countywide flood distribution center at West Virginia Wesleyan College will close for good Sunday at 3 p.m. No one will be admitted after that time, according to a press release from city and county officials.
The site in the college’s Auxiliary Gymnasium will be open Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a joint update from the City of Buckhannon, the Upshur County Commission and the Upshur County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Whatever is left on the shelves Sunday afternoon will be redistributed. Some of it will go to community locations around the county. The rest will go to the Lewis County Distribution Center in the Market Place Plaza, which has agreed to take the remaining inventory and will welcome Upshur County residents.
Churches, volunteer fire departments, community centers, schools and other nonprofits that can house supplies for later distribution in their own communities are asked to come to the distribution center at 151 Cebe Ross Drive on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and pick up items.
A group with storage space but no way to hand supplies out can still take them, officials said. Those supplies can be staged and mobilized later.
The American Red Cross will keep taking casework for financial assistance at the Wesleyan library Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day for residents whose homes suffered major damage or were destroyed.
All city departments remain committed to debris removal. Every city park is closed except City Park on Park Street. Festival Fridays are canceled through August 7.
Residents are reminded to get flood-damaged debris to the curb as soon as possible. Items should be staged at the edge of the right of way where they will not block roads, sidewalks or drainage paths. City, Department of Highways and National Guard units are working systematically across the neighborhoods that flooded, part of a countywide effort to speed up cleanup.
Anyone who needs help with cleanup, debris removal, deliveries or other recovery needs can request assistance online or call the non-emergency number at 304-472-4983. Residents who want to pitch in can sign up to volunteer.
