Fairmont State’s WV Folklife Center to host “Second Saturday” events

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will be open for a series of events taking place each second Saturday of the month beginning in January and continuing through April. The first of the events will take place on Saturday, January 8.

The “Second Saturday” events are free and open to the public, featuring crafting workshops, heritage games and audio tours in the second-floor gallery. Current exhibits in the gallery include A People Upon the Land, a series of displays with narration based on West Virginia’s cultural history, and the Porter Stiles Civil War Collection.

“The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center is a cultural gem,” Mirta M. Martin, president of Fairmont State University, said. “The Folklife Center is the perfect place for folks to learn more about West Virginia’s rich cultural heritage. And now, through Second Saturday series events, everyone can not only learn about that heritage, but they can also experience those rich traditions first-hand.”

Those attending the January event will have the opportunity to learn about the rolled paper art, quilling. Quilling workshops are suitable for guests ages seven to adult, and will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. All materials and equipment will be provided to participants.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center is located within a restored barn on the campus of Fairmont State University. The Center is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating West Virginia’s cultural heritage. For more information, contact 304-367-4403.
