Fairmont State to showcase economic impact at Day at the Capitol

Fairmont State University will travel to Charleston on Friday, January 23, for its annual Day at the Capitol, highlighting the university’s impact on West Virginia’s economy, workforce and communities.

During the event, students, faculty and staff will engage with lawmakers, present academic programs and demonstrate how Fairmont State contributes to the state. The university will be at the Capitol from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., filling the Senate and House Halls as well as the Upper and Lower Rotundas.

“Fairmont State’s Day at the Capitol is about more than just sharing our successes — it’s about demonstrating how deeply we are invested in West Virginia’s future,” said President Mike Davis in a press release. “We are champions for West Virginia’s progress. Our work doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It reaches into every corner of the state, fueling economic growth, preparing career-ready graduates and strengthening communities.”

In 2025, the university generated $170.6 million in total sales and output impact, supported more than 650 jobs statewide and provided $73.4 million in employee compensation, according to the press release. For every dollar of state appropriations received, Fairmont State created $8.25 in economic value.

The university has launched new academic programs to address workforce needs, including the B.A. in Outdoor Leadership and the M.S. in Environmental Science. Its flight program trains pilots to support the state’s aviation sector, while its nursing programs fill healthcare roles across the region.

Fairmont State also leads community engagement efforts. Through the Middle College program, the university addresses foster care challenges by allowing youth to earn college credit while completing high school. The university provided shelter and services during the 2025 Father’s Day Flood.

The university’s 2025–2035 Strategic Vision was developed through what the university called one of the most inclusive strategic planning processes in higher education, engaging students, faculty, staff, community partners and legislators.
