Water in the Woods

WVU Extension’s Water in the Woods program comes to Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp near Weston on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day explores how forests, water, streams, aquatic life and land stewardship are connected in West Virginia and across Appalachia, with practical approaches to sustaining those resources.

The program is aimed at landowners, natural resource professionals, educators and anyone interested in the state’s woods and waters. More than 100 people had already registered as of Sept. 24, according to the Upshur County Extension Office.

Speakers:

  • Ken Ashton, geologist, West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
  • Vaike Haas, associate professor of landscape architecture, West Virginia University
  • Ben Spong, forest operations Extension specialist, West Virginia University
  • Ryan Ward, owner and senior environmental scientist, All Star Ecology
  • Nicolas Zegre, professor of forest hydrology, West Virginia University
  • Stuart Welsh, assistant unit leader, West Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit
  • Kevin Dodge, natural resources program coordinator, Garrett College
  • Kevin Eliason, mussel program leader, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources

Registration is $20 and includes lunch; 5.0 SAF Category 1 CFE credits are available. Organizers say the deadline for finalizing lunch numbers is approaching, so register soon. Organizations with a water-related educational display may also be able to take part.
