She was born in Meadowville on September 23, 1936, a daughter of the late Minter and Viola S. Allender Smith.

After her marriage to James, Ethel assumed the role of homemaker. She loved spending her days caring for her home and her family. Ethel was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in Buckhannon. She loved attending church functions and singing during Sunday services. During her stay at Holbrook Health Care Center Ethel was well known as a socialite. She never knew a stranger and enjoyed carrying on a conversation with anyone who crossed her path.  Ethel also enjoyed playing BINGO with her friends at Holbrook’s.
