BUCKHANNON – Dogs and their owners can take a dip to commemorate the end of Lewis County’s pool season and support the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility.

Jan Cochran, director of the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility, said the annual Doggie Dip will take place Aug. 23 at the Lewis County pool from noon to 4 p.m.

“It’s $6 per animal, and all proceeds benefit us. Proof of rabies vaccine, like a certificate, not their tag, has to come with you before the dog can go in a pool,” Cochran said. “They’re also doing a donation drive of bleach wipes, paper towels, leashes, baking soda, and canned cat and dog food.”

The director of the pool, Josh Hinchman, has organized the event since 2019.

“Josh came up with it. He said they close the pool down, there’s no public swimming after a certain date, and we always do it like a week or two weeks after they close it down,” Cochran said. “He just thought it’d be a little fundraiser that would help us and give the community a chance to bring their dogs out and let them swim.”

The funds gathered during the event will go toward covering the costs of flea products, antibiotics and other items like that, depending on what they need at the time.

“The dogs have a blast. Some of the dogs hang out in the kiddie pool, and some of the bigger dogs are just having a blast jumping off the sides, and their owners are throwing retrieving toys. Some of the kids that come in with their pets, they’ll get in the pool and swim with their pets,” Cochran said.

“The way their pool is set up over there, they have the kiddie pool over to the left, and then over to the side, they have these slides that come down, so it’s shallow and then it gets into deeper water. A lot of the kids will play in that shallow water with their dogs, and then usually the ones that have retrieving breeds will go over to the deeper end and throw their retrieving toys. There’s two labs that come, and they just wear themselves out. They just have a blast.”
