COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia top 3,000 as active cases reach highest levels since February

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 8,175 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 596 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (188), Barbour (115), Lewis (92), Randolph (160) and Webster (31) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Four additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 63-year old female from Mingo County, a 79-year old female from Wood County, a 60-year old male from Cabell County, and a 50-year old male from Berkeley County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of August 19, 2021, there have been 3,259,238 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 176,608 total cases and 3,001 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 7.71%.

A total of 896,993 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 50% of the state.
