COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia hit 2,300 as February draws to a close

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday that 275 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (4), Barbour (17), Lewis (3) and Webster (2) counties.

A total of 74 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 76-year old male from Preston County, an 83-year old female from Clay County, and a 31-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of February 28, 2021, there have been 2,177,707 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 131,855 total cases and 2,300 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 7,258 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 122,297 people have recovered and 2,300 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.5%.

A total of 197,431 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
