COVID-19 death toll in West Virginia surges past 1,200 mark on Thursday, including another death in Randolph County

The Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that more than 150 West Virginians have died of COVID-19 in the week leading up to Christmas. The toll includes 34 additional deaths reported Thursday morning.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for the families and friends of these West Virginians, especially during the holiday season,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, in a press release.

The DHHR also said 1,303 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in the Mountain State on Thursday. An all-time record 22,957 cases are active heading into Christmas Day.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (17), Barbour (27), Lewis (14), Randolph (7) and Webster (4) counties.

A total of 115 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Thursday’s Upshur County update:

  • Added 10 probable and 14 confirmed cases to Dec. 23
  • Added one probable and two confirmed cases to Dec. 22
  • Removed seven probable cases and added five confirmed cases to Dec. 21
  • Removed three confirmed cases from Dec. 20
  • Removed one probable and one confirmed case from Dec. 19
  • Removed one confirmed case from Dec. 18
  • Removed two probable cases and added three confirmed cases to Dec. 17

The new deaths reported statewide Thursday include:

  • an 80-year old male from Jefferson County,
  • an 83-year old female from Fayette County,
  • a 68-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • a 90-year old female from Hancock County,
  • a 73-year old female from Pocahontas County,
  • an 87-year old female from Fayette County,
  • a 56-year old male from Ohio County,
  • a 77-year old female from Pocahontas County,
  • a 73-year old male from Monongalia County,
  • an 81-year old female from Summers County,
  • a 46-year old female from Kanawha County,
  • a 77-year old female from Pocahontas County,
  • a 92-year old female from Brooke County,
  • a 79-year old female from Pocahontas County,
  • a 63-year old male from Brooke County,
  • a 90-year old female from Brooke County,
  • a 66-year old male from Wyoming County,
  • an 89-year old male from Wood County,
  • a 65-year old male from Fayette County,
  • an 80-year old female from Hancock County,
  • a 94-year old female from Greenbrier County,
  • an 88-year old female from Monongalia County,
  • a 95-year old male from Hancock County,
  • a 90-year old male from Summers County,
  • an 80-year old female from Randolph County,
  • an 81-year old male from Hancock County,

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 24, 2020, there have been 1,422,569 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 77,239 total cases and 1,228 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 22,957 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 53,054 people have recovered and 1,228 have died. The daily percent positive was 7.9%.
