Charles Capito named to West Virginia University Board of Governors

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee welcomed Friday’s (Feb. 8) appointment of Charleston finance executive Charles Capito to the institution’s Board of Governors.

Capito, managing director and complex manager for the Wells Fargo Advisors office in Charleston, was appointed by Gov. Jim Justice to replace Charleston attorney and former Board Chair Tom Flaherty, who was not eligible for reappointment. Capito’s term will run through June 30, 2022.

“Charlie will be a great addition to the board,” Gee said. “His financial abilities will be especially important and valued as the University continues to cope with the pressures it faces.”

WVU BoG President William Wilmoth echoed Gee’s welcome: “Charlie Capito is a great appointment to WVU’s Board of Governors. We welcome him and we thank Gov. Justice for an inspired selection. Charlie brings a business perspective and a great love for WVU, both of which will make him a valuable addition.”

“I am immensely honored to have been considered by Gov. Justice, President Gee and others at West Virginia University to serve as a member of the Board of Governors, Capito said. “I have fond memories of watching Mountaineer games with my parents and witnessing the impressive growth of the economic research happening at the university, which is such a critically important influence in our state.

“I look forward to taking on this new role with such a distinguished group of fellow members and working together to advance the university’s vision.”

Capito is the husband of U.S. Sen. Shelly Moore Capito, R-WV.
