Castan receives scholarship to Davis & Elkins College

ELKINS – Eulalia Castan of Hedgesville, West Virginia, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Davis & Elkins College after participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day on the College campus. Castan, a student at Hedgesville High School, was selected from a group of 84 highest achieving high school seniors accepted to attend D&E this fall.

Castan is the daughter of Ricardo Pizarro and Pilar Castan, originally from Barcelona, Spain, and now living in Hedgesville. At Hedgesville High School, she has earned multiple academic honors including induction into the National Honor Society, Art Honors Society and Hispanic Honors Society. She also is a member of the varsity cross country, swim, and track and field teams. Castan plans to major in nursing at D&E.

Students vying for the scholarships submitted essays and participated in interviews with a panel made up of a Davis & Elkins alumnus or alumna, a current student and a faculty member.

To be eligible to compete, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and received acceptance to attend Davis & Elkins. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as a leader. The essay of no more than 500 words consisted of a personal statement outlining the student’s interests, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.

The invitation only spring Senator Leadership and Scholarship Day is scheduled for March 23. To be considered for the spring event, students must apply for admission to the College and submit necessary documents for the admission review. Upon meeting admission requirements and eligibility for Leadership and Scholarship Day, an invitation will be sent. Please contact the Office of Admission at 304-637-1230 for more details.
