Carpenter’s Crunch Time Column: Bucs look for the upset at UHS

BUCKHANNON – We have a lot of big games this week so let’s get right down to business.

Brian Bergstrom gained yet another game on last week posting a 4-1 mark while I went 3-2.

This is starting to reach a critical point for me as I am now down four games overall as Brian owns a 21-4 record while I am 17-8.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t say this before we get started that my prayers and well-wishes go out everyone that has suffered through Hurricane Ian, whether it be in Florida or South Carolina. I have friends and family in both locations. You just hope for the best when a natural disaster like that hits.

Now on to our games:

Buckhannon-Upshur (2-2) at University (3-2)

Couldn’t even get a phone call back from UHS about securing a spot in the press box this week. Total class again from this program. UHS probably wins this game but I hope our Bucs make them work for it. B-U is winning the games they are supposed to but it would be nice to see them rise up and grab a win that nobody was expecting. My pick: University, 34-21; Brian’s pick: University, 20-13.

Bridgeport (4-1) at Parkersburg South (5-0)

This is the game of the week in the state. Remember when Parkersburg South beat University 78-14 in week two? I do…good times. Bridgeport is good, we all know that. But I don’t think they are in the same class as Parkersburg South this year. My pick: Parkersburg South 49-28; Brian’s pick: Parkersburg South, 35-14.

Elkins (0-4) at Grafton (0-5)

This is not the game of the week. We go from two of the top teams in the state to two of the worst. Both teams are looking for their first win of the season. I assume baring a tie one of these two teams will actually get a win. I guess I will go with Elkins. My pick: Elkins, 7-6; Brian’s pick: Grafton, 20-6.

Wheeling (3-1) at WVWC (0-4)

It’s homecoming for the Bobcats this Saturday and my oh my were they so close to getting that first win last week. Weather is supposed to be awful tomorrow so maybe that will actually help the ‘Cats. Going to go with Wheeling but I really hope I am wrong with this one. My pick: Wheeling, 35-33; Brian’s pick: WVWC, 33-30.

WVU (2-2) at Texas (2-2)

WVU has had some success in Austin over the years. No one does less with more than the University of Texas football program. I smell another win for the Mountaineers. My pick: WVU, 27-21; Brian’s pick: Texas, 28-24.

Until next week… see ya!
