Carpenter Crunch Time Week 7; You think things are bad at WVU, be glad we aren’t Bill Belichick at UNC

Columnist Duane Carpenter criticizes Bill Belichick’s controversial Nantucket trip and tenure at UNC while defending Rich Rodriguez, updating local My Buckhannon staff and reader pick standings and previewing this week’s high school and college matchups.

BUCKHANNON – If there is a bigger mess than Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia, it’s Bill Belichick at North Carolina.

For all of the faults of Rodriguez, and there are many, he didn’t decide to take a vacation this week during the Mountaineers’ bye week like Uncle Bill did last week at UNC. You read that right. Uncle Bill and girlfriend Jordon Hudson ventured to Nantucket over the weekend with UNC on its bye week. That is simply unreal for a coach to do that midseason, especially one on shaky ground like Uncle Bill.

Uncle Bill had to put out a statement today saying, “I’m fully committed to UNC football and the program we’re building here.” If you have to put out a statement like that, I think that means you probably aren’t committed to the program.

It all comes amid elevated financial investments into the UNC program, none more significant than spending at least $10 million annually to hire the 73-year-old Belichick as a first-time college coach. Thank goodness WVU isn’t spending that much on Fraud.

On the field, the Tar Heels have been almost as bad as WVU. The Tar Heels (2-3) have managed a total of four touchdowns in three losses to power-conference opponents, each coming by at least 25 points. One of their two wins came against a Championship Subdivision opponent in Richmond.

Belichick’s relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, has generated its own tabloid-level interest nonsense. She has been a frequent distraction and sideline presence before games.

So here it is, for all those tired of me bashing Fraud, I am going to say something nice about him. You ready? Here it is …. at least Rodriguez isn’t as bad as having Bill Belichick as your college coach.

Now onto the important stuff, the My Buckhannon staff contest. The standings look like this.

STANDINGS (WEEK 6)

Name     Week      Overall

Duane    6-1           33-9

Brian       6-1           31-11

Katie       6-1           28-14

Monica  5-2           23-19

As a group, we only had one game different last week, and that was Monica taking Florida State over Miami (Fla.), so Brian, Katie and I all went 6-1 while Monica went 5-2. Little changed in the overall standings as I remain two games ahead of Brian and five ahead of Katie.

When it comes to our readers, one was better than everyone else last week, and that was DANNY MCCAULEY, who was the only person who posted a perfect 7-0 record. Congrats to Danny. A $20 gift certificate will be heading your way! Again, this year we are getting our highest volume of submissions ever, so we here at My Buckhannon truly appreciate that. Thank you for your support and keep those submissions coming in.

You still have time to get your picks in for this week, as we accept them until Friday at 6:59 p.m. prior to the high school kickoffs (One submission only). Please click here to make your picks this week.

Now onto our games:

Lewis County (1-4) at Buckhannon-Upshur (0-5)

Three staffers are going with the Bucs this week. The vibe I am getting from the community is that the Bucs get the win Friday night. Not to put too much pressure on B-U, but a lot of people feel this is the game B-U ends their 16-game losing streak. I agree.

Duane: Buckhannon-Upshur; Brian: Buckhannon-Upshur; Katie: Buckhannon-Upshur;  Monica: Lewis County

Elkins (5-1) at North Marion (4-1)

A key game in Class AAA as both teams hope to have a home playoff game in the first round. North Marion is ranked eighth, and Elkins is 10th. Of course, there is plenty of season left, but North Marion has just one team left on their schedule with a winning record after this. Elkins gets Fairmont Senior next week, so they might need this game more.

Duane: North Marion; Brian: North Marion; Katie: North Marion; Monica: Elkins

West Virginia Wesleyan (0-6) at Fairmont State (2-3)

It will be Fairmont State’s homecoming game. It is surprising that FSU has a 0-3 mark in MEC play. They have to be disappointed with that, as they were picked second in the conference preseason poll. Fairmont State has won seven consecutive meetings in the series; Wesleyan’s last win against the Falcons came on Nov. 1, 2014, a 34-13 Bobcats win in Buckhannon.

Duane: Fairmont State; Brian: Fairmont State; Katie: Fairmont State; Monica: Fairmont State

The Final Four:

Fairmont Senior (4-1) at Wheeling Park (4-2)

Duane: Wheeling Park; Brian: Wheeling Park; Katie: Wheeling Park; Monica: Fairmont Senior

Morgantown (6-0) at Martinsburg (4-2)

Duane: Martinsburg; Brian: Morgantown; Katie: Morgantown; Monica: Martinsburg

Oklahoma (5-0) vs. Texas (3-2)

Duane: Oklahoma; Brian: Oklahoma; Katie: Oklahoma; Monica: Texas

Old Dominion (4-1) at Marshall (2-3)

Duane: Old Dominion;  Brian: Old Dominion; Katie: Old Dominion; Monica: Marshall
