Carpenter Crunch Time Week 4: Winning in spite of…

Duane Carpenter says West Virginia beat Pitt despite Rich Rodriguez’s poor coaching, condemns Travis Kelce’s support for Rashee Rice after a high-speed crash, then reports My Buckhannon standings and this week’s local game picks.

BUCKHANNON – Okay, let’s get this out of the way.

West Virginia beat Pitt Saturday in spite of Rich Rodriguez, not because of him. Pulling quarterback Nicco Marchiol in the third quarter, deep in our own end, for a true freshman against Pitt was beyond stupid. Rich Rod took a 14-3 lead and turned it into a 24-14 deficit with that move. A dipstick move by a dipstick coach. Look around too, the move has been lambasted by more than just me on the world wide web.

Again, some have misconstrued my words about this situation. I love WVU and will, never, ever wish them to lose a game, especially against Pitt, but I remain steadfast that Rodriguez isn’t the right coach to lead this team. And he proved it even more to me Saturday night.

My other outrage of the week goes to Travis Kelce and some of his teammates. They decided to wear “Free 4” shirts in support of their teammate Rashee Rice, who is serving a suspension for his involvement in a high-speed car crash that injured several people.

Rice was going 119mph before crashing his Lamborghini, hitting six vehicles, injuring four people, then fleeing the scene. He’s lucky nobody died. So, Kelce and teammates wear “Free 4” shirts to support him? How about you guys quit being tone-deaf idiots? Kelcie’s star is almost diminished when it comes to his playing days. He is overexposed at this point. Just go away already. The Chiefs being 0-2 makes me happy.

Now onto the important stuff, the My Buckhannon standings.

STANDINGS (WEEK 3)

Name     Week      Overall

Duane    6-1           18-3

Brian       7-0           17-4

Katie       3-4           12-9

Monica  4-3           10-11

Brian, by picking WVU last week, went a perfect 7-0 to pull within one game of me as I went 6-1. Katie and Monica had rough weeks as Katie maintained her spot in third place.

When it comes to our readers, we had four go a perfect 7-0 – Two Chidester, Steve Hollen, Mackenzie Michael and Jeremy Harsh. Going to the tiebreaker of total points for the WVU-Pitt game (55 points, 31-24 WVU), the win goes to JEREMY HARSH who actually picked 55 points, edging out Chidester who picked 54. So, congrats to Mr. Harsh who will be receiving a gift certificate for his win.

You still have time to get your picks in for this week as we accept them until Friday at 6:59 p.m. prior to the high school kickoffs (One submission only). Please click here to make your picks this week.

Now onto our games:

Buckhannon-Upshur (0-3) at Elkins (3-0)

So, the Bucs would be playoff bound at No. 15 in Class AAAA if the playoffs started today. Tell me that isn’t crazy. Thank you again WVSSAC, the state needed FOUR classes.

Duane: Elkins; Brian: Elkins; Katie: Elkins; Monica: Elkins

West Virginia State (1-1) at West Virginia Wesleyan (0-3)

West Virginia Wesleyan carries a 27-game losing skid into Saturday’s MEC opener. The Bobcats were last on the winning side on Oct. 22, 2022, a 31-30 win against Alderson Broaddus. Really nothing else much to say. It’s tough times right now for the ‘Cats.

Duane: West Virginia State; Brian: West Virginia State; Katie: West Virginia State; Monica: West Virginia State

West Virginia (2-1) at Kansas (2-1)

Can WVU win on the road this week? It seems like Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has been a Jayhawk for 15 years now.

Duane: Kansas; Brian: Kansas; Katie: Kansas; Monica: West Virginia

The Final Four:

East Fairmont (1-2) at Lewis County (0-3)

Duane: East Fairmont; Brian: East Fairmont; Katie: East Fairmont; Monica: Lewis County

Philip Barbour (2-1) at Bridgeport (3-0)

Duane: Bridgeport; Brian: Bridgeport; Katie: Bridgeport; Monica: Bridgeport

North Marion (3-0) at Fairmont Senior (2-0)

Duane: Fairmont Senior; Brian: Fairmont Senior; Katie: Fairmont Senior; Monica: North Marion

Marshall (1-2) at Middle Tennessee State (1-2)

Duane: Marshall; Brian: Marshall; Katie: Middle Tennessee State; Monica: Marshall
