Carpenter Crunch Time Week 13; Is this Neal Brown’s final game in Morgantown?

BUCKHANNON – Another disappointing and blow out loss at home for WVU last week against Baylor. It is hard to believe that the Mountaineers are a paltry 2-4 at Mountaineer Field.

And one of those wins was against FCS Albany while the other was against 4-6 Kansas.

The home losses have been ugly as they have been outscored in their four home setbacks by a 156-81 score.

Overall, the defense has been atrocious allowing over 23 points to eight of their nine Power 5 opponents.

WVU has been so marginal under Neal Brown that it all begins to run together, but what really sucks about this season is, if you haven’t noticed, the Big XII isn’t very good this year. The conference lost their two flagship schools in Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC. Those two defections left the conference wide open this year, with many thinking it could be WVU winning it coming off their nine-win season last year.

BYU seems intent on not winning the Big XII, Iowa State and Kansas State have head-scratching losses in the last few weeks. Colorado will get steamrolled if they make the playoffs. Arizona State is simply ok. The rest of the league if just a myrid of teams 4-6 or 5-5.

This year may be the ultimate failure by Brown while being at WVU. There are rumors that he may leave voluntarily going back to Troy or his alma mater of UMass. I find it hard to believe that he would walk away from his WVU contract on his own for less money.

Then Brown fired off this gem this week. “We don’t want to be 5-5, but we’re not 0-10. We’ve done some good things in some games we’ve won, but we haven’t been consistent, and that’s a frustrating thing.”

There you go WVU fans…be happy we aren’t 0-10. I do finally think that WVU will finally move on from Brown after this season is completed. I have never been a Brown hater, but WVU fans deserve better than this.

Now onto the important stuff, the My Buckhannon standings, which look like this.

Name   Week   Overall
Duane   6-1        68-16
Brian      6-1        65-19
Katie      3-4        55-29
Monica  6-1       55-29

Brian, Monica and I all went 6-1 while Katie had a tough week at 3-4. I still remain three games ahead of Brian with four weeks left while Katie and Monica are now in a tie for third place.

Our weekly winner was SANDRA KIMBLE. She was our only reader to go a perfect 7-0. So congrats to Sandra on her perfect week and winning a $20 gift certificate to Sam’s Pizza.

Now onto our games this week.

Elkins (5-5) at Herbert Hoover (10-0)

If there is a team that may be able to move into the Class AAA title game that isn’t named Bridgeport or Fairmont Senior, it might be Herbert Hoover (along with Princeton). Elkins backed into the playoffs by losing four straight. These two teams played just a few weeks ago and Hoover won 56-7.  I think Herbert Hoover wins this one by a big margin.

Duane: Herbert Hoover; Brian: Herbert Hoover; Katie: Herbert Hoover; Monica: Elkins

Lewis County (5-5) at Oak Hill (9-1)

B-U played both schools and honestly Lewis County was the better opponent. Oak Hill has always been a pretender in my eyes in Class AAA this year despite their record and lofty No. 5 ranking. I think this game could be close, but I will still go with Oak Hill.

Duane: Oak Hill; Brian: Oak Hill; Katie: Oak Hill; Monica: Lewis County

UCF (4-6) at West Virginia (5-5)

WVU gets bowl eligible with a win. Could this be Neal Brown’s final home game? Have to wait and see. Despite how they played last week, I think WVU should win this one.

Duane: West Virginia; Brian: West Virginia; Katie: West Virginia; Monica: UCF

The Final Four:

Woodrow Wilson (6-4) at Morgantown (7-3)

Duane: Morgantown; Brian: Morgantown; Katie: Morgantown; Monica: Morgantown

Clay County (7-3) at Philip Barbour (7-3)

Duane: Philip Barbour; Brian: Philip Barbour; Katie: Clay County; Monica: Philip Barbour

Marshall (7-3) at Old Dominion (4-6)

Duane: Marshall; Brian: Marshall; Katie: Marshall;  Monica: Marshall

Alabama (8-2) at Oklahoma (5-5)

Duane: Alabama; Brian: Alabama; Katie: Alabama; Monica: Alabama
