Carol Ann Long

Carol Ann Long, age 81, of Tennerton, WV, died at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV on August 26, 2025. She was born in Upshur County on February 5, 1944, to the late Lenny and Etta (Curtis) Liston of Buckhannon. She was an only child, but was married for 43 years to the love of her life, Burl Long, who preceded her in death in 2011.

She is survived by her children: Becky Walton and husband Mike of Lorentz; Chris Long and wife Stephanie of Excelsior; and Bethany Ware and husband Morgan of Ellamore; her grandchildren that she loved immensely: Justin Walton and wife Courtney; Catie and Hannah Walton; and Madolyn Long. She also leaves sisters-in-law Caroline Long and Rita Watson; a brother-in-law Basil Long; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by family and the many friends that she made throughout her lifetime.

Carol graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1962 and worked at Walker’s Shoe Store on Main Street. She also worked with the United Methodist Conference and the local television channel, Channel 3. She looked forward to writing her column for the Record Delta, which she wrote for over 20 years, because she wanted to share words and stories of kindness. She always said she’d like to compile everything into a book.

Carol was involved with the Strawberry Festival for over 60 years, holding many offices, announcing parades, scheduling bands, meeting band directors, and working with businesses to bring a multitude of events to Upshur County.

She was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a member of several church groups.

Over the years, she worked with the Red Cross, Parish House, Christmas Store, Heart Telethon, Tennerton Community Council, her ‘Sisters’ group, and looked forward to her ‘Class Reunion’ meetings each month. Carol was also proud and humbled to be selected the Upshur County Citizen of the Year.

Carol enjoyed hosting family dinners at her house at Christmastime, writing, sketching, reading, talking with friends, being with her family, yard sale-ing, and taking care of her beloved cats. She had a passion for her community and always tried to see the best in people and situations. Her kindness and willingness to do anything for her friends, family, and community will be missed.

The family will receive friends at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 4–7 pm. The body will be moved to the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and will lie in state on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 9–10 am, the funeral hour, with the Rev. Paul Rebelo officiating. Interment will follow in the Heavner Cemetery.

Carol left her footprints on the heart of Upshur County and would be so happy if, in lieu of flowers, you consider making a donation to the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church Wednesday Night Community Dinners in her memory by using PayPal to chapelhillumchurch@gmail.com or mailing to 88 S. Kanawha Street, Buckhannon, WV 26201. Online condolences may be extended to the Long family at www.heavnerandcutright.com. The Long family entrusted the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel with the arrangements.
