Canaan Valley Resort announces summer/fall guided hike series

Davis, W.Va. – Featuring the spectacular scenery of the highest mountain valley in the Eastern U.S., Canaan Valley Resort’s Guided Hike Series, taking place June through October, offers the perfect opportunity to experience nature’s splendor with family and friends.

“With the heightened interest among state residents and leisure travelers generally to get outdoors and enjoy the wonders of nature, we’ve put together a series of monthly guided hikes to showcase the beauty of our unique area,” said Sam England, Canaan Valley Resort General Manager.

England noted the series kicks off this weekend with the Blackbird Knob Hike on Saturday, June 4th.

The six-mile Blackbird Knob hike features gorgeous valley and high meadow views and passes through an ecologically diverse area. The hike is physically challenging, to include some rough terrain and water crossings. Pre-registration is required by Friday at 10am at the Beech Club or by calling (304) 866-4121. A separate Blackbird Knob Hike will be offered on August 20th.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk on the moon? On June 25th, guests can experience something similar as part of the Moon Rocks Hike. Located at the Yellow Creek Natural Area, an 860-acre public preserve owned and managed by the West Virginia Land Trust in Davis, the trail includes massive formations of “moon rock” sandstone bedrock some 480 million years old.   The hike is approximately 4 miles long. Shuttle bus service will be provided from the Main Lodge.  The return trip to the resort features scheduled stops at local breweries to enjoy craft beers. A separate Moon Rocks Hike will be offered on September 24th.

On July 9th and August 6th, the resort will host the Mid-Summer Walk Between the Parks events. The Walk Between the Parks hike is an eight-mile, moderately strenuous hike between Canaan Valley Resort and Blackwater Falls State Parks featuring amazing views of the valley.

The resort will offer the Douglas Falls/Blackwater Canyon guided hike on September 10th. Passing by abandoned coke ovens, Douglas Falls, the junction of the North Fork of the Blackwater River and the main river, and views of Lindy Point, this 10-mile walk traverses history as well as breathtaking scenery.

On October 1st, the resort will host the 8-mile “Walk Between the Parks” hike. Participants will hike between Canaan Valley Resort and Blackwater Falls State Park and have the opportunity to participate in other activities, like the “Walk-a-Mile” contest and alternative (shorter, interpretive) walks.

Participants for all events are encouraged to bring their own water and snacks. Pre-registration for all events is recommended by calling Canaan Valley Resort at (304) 866-4121. A small per person fee applies.

Canaan Valley Resort is a four seasons destination with a wide array of adventures and a variety of guest rooms and cabins.
