Bunker scores early for soccer ‘Cats but they earn a 1-1 draw with Point Park

Casey Bunker’s third-minute goal gave West Virginia Wesleyan an early lead, but after a 51st-minute red card they played shorthanded and conceded in the 61st minute to settle for a 1-1 draw with Point Park.

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan men’s soccer earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against visiting Point Park University on Sunday afternoon at Culpepper Stadium.

The Bobcats wasted little time getting on the board, as Casey Bunker finished a composed chance in the third minute off an assist from Caden Carpenter. The early tally gave Wesleyan an immediate spark, and the home side maintained pressure through the first half with a 5–3 shot advantage.

Goalkeeper Matteo Marciani organized a steady back line that withstood Point Park’s set pieces and physical play, while midfielders Erik Rostoen and Dajun Barthley helped control tempo through possession. Wesleyan’s aggressive defensive effort, however, came with intensity—collecting four first-half yellow cards but successfully protecting the 1–0 lead at the break.

Momentum shifted early in the second half after a red card to Moises Moncada in the 51st minute left Wesleyan down a man. Point Park capitalized on the advantage. Pressure paid off in the 61st minute when Chalamish broke free to slot the equalizer past Marciani.

Playing the final 40 minutes shorthanded, Wesleyan absorbed wave after wave of Point Park pressure. Marciani finished with four saves, including two crucial stops in the closing 20 minutes, while the Bobcats’ midfield rotation of Sante Klosterman, Abdul Bediako, and Roneba Cordice logged heavy minutes.

The Bobcats travel to Wheeling University Wednesday, Oct. 15 for a MEC match slated for 7 p.m.
