Healthy Grandfamilies program in Upshur County expands to include relative/kinship caregivers

The Healthy Grandfamilies program returns to Upshur County on June 16, and this year it is expanding to include relative and kinship caregivers alongside the grandparents it has traditionally served.

The free program meets every Tuesday through July 28 at the Upshur County Recreational Park pavilion, behind the Buckhannon-Upshur High School football field. Each session begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and runs about an hour and a half, with on-site childcare provided.

“Each week, we get together and eat lunch, and while the children play together, we work with a presenter on different topics,” said Lori Ulderich Harvey, executive director of the Upshur County Family Resource Network. “There are no big presentations. We sit and talk with the experts who usually have lived experience.”

Weekly discussions cover advocating for your child, family communication, school-related topics, legal rights, digital media literacy and fostering resilience. Families who complete most sessions receive a grocery gift card.

The program is open to any grandparent or kinship caregiver raising a child, through either formal custody or informal arrangements. To register, call the Upshur County Family Resource Network at 304-473-1051 or email upshurfrn@yahoo.com.
