Bucs swim to fifth-place finish at Bridgeport Invitational

BRIDGEPORT –The Buckhannon-Upshur swim Buccaneers claimed three events in the Bridgeport Invitational last Saturday at The Bridge Complex.

Preston Bennett won both individual races, taking the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.00 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.60.

Bennett was also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team along with Reis Leonard, Owen Caynor and Carter Zuliani with a time of 1:39.04.

Zuliani had the lone runner-up spot for the Bucs taking second in the 50-yard free style with a time of 23.76.

The trio of Bennett, Leonard, Zuliani and Caynor placed third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.29.

The Bucs placed fifth out of nine teams with 64 points.

Parkersburg won the event with 104 points while Parkersburg South was second with 97, George Washington was third with 89 and Bridgeport was fourth with 67.

“This was a large meet with good competition,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jennifer Bennett. “It gave the kids a nice indication of how they are doing this early in the season. I thought the kids had a great meet.  Some of the teams we competed against had 40 kids. We are small in numbers but we have quality swimmers.”

The Bucs will be back in action next Wednesday hosting George Washington in the West Virginia Wesleyan College pool at 6 p.m.
