Frank B. Bartlett American Legion Post 7 in Buckhannon has received a $7,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. This grant supports efforts to update the Post Home to assist area veterans and their families.
Commander Mike Wallace stated that the funds will be used to complete improvements in the Post Home, which was built in 1985. Post 7 hosts various veteran-related groups, including the VA Guitars for Vets program in Upshur County. The VET CENTER, an arm of the VA, has also signed an agreement with Post 7 for outreach using the Post Home. Additionally, the Post holds veteran’s assistance days, where a VA-accredited Service Officer aids veterans and surviving spouses in filing VA Claims and explains available VA benefits. In the last two years, Post 7 has helped about 200 veterans file claims. Wallace also mentioned that the post hosts a variety of events at the Post Home, often including a free meal for veterans.
In both rural and urban settings, the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund supports hundreds of organizations and programs in the communities where they operate through funding, time, expertise and resources. Weyerhaeuser made its first charitable donation in 1903 and has provided more than $266 million in grants through its formal giving program established in 1948.
