Buckhannon-Upshur High School hosting financial aid help session Thursday

Questions about financial aid? Need help with the FAFSA? Have you applied for the Promise Scholarship? Do you know if you qualify for the Invest Grant?

Buckhannon-Upshur High School will host a financial aid representative from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission on Thursday, February 12, to help students and families navigate the process of paying for college.

The session will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school. No appointments are necessary, though families who want a specific time can contact B-UHS Student Services to arrange one.

The representative can assist with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA, as well as applications for the Promise Scholarship, the WV Invests Grant and other state financial aid programs.

The WVHEPC is the state agency that coordinates financial aid programs for West Virginia’s higher education system. Its Office of Financial Aid and Outreach Services administers grants, scholarships and other aid programs available to West Virginia students.

Several key deadlines are approaching. The Promise Scholarship, a merit-based award worth up to $5,500 per year, requires a completed application and FAFSA by March 1. The scholarship is available to West Virginia high school graduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The WV Invests Grant is a separate program that covers tuition and fees for select certificate and associate degree programs at public institutions. Priority is given to programs in high-demand fields such as healthcare and information technology.

Students and families with questions can also call the state’s financial aid hotline at 877-987-7664.
