Buckhannon Post 7 rally falls short against Garrett (Md.) County in 9-8 loss

TENNERTON – Buckhannon Post 7 battled but couldn’t overcome an early six-run deficit to Garrett County Post 71/214 in a 9-8 loss Friday night at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

Despite the setback, Buckhannon Post 7 manager Kevin Boring was pleased with how his team fought back against Garrett County Post 71/214.

“Coming into this game, we are near the end of the season and that can play to the mental aspect of the team,” Boring said. “But I thought we were pretty intense for most of the game and down six runs at one point, we were able to battle to the very last out with them. We did a good job of not caving in and kept battling and scraping. Anytime you play a good team like Garrett County, just to be in a game with them is a testament to us. They are a good team and we battled them to the very end.”

Garrett County had built a 6-0 lead before Buckhannon made it a game with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ian Donnen had a two-run triple, Ryder Aman hit a two-run double and Peyton Bennett smacked a one-run single to account for the scoring as Post 7 pulled to within one, at 6-5.

Garrett County built their lead up to 8-5 after a two-run single by Chance Ritchey in the top of the fifth inning.

Post 7 made it an 8-6 game in the bottom of the sixth when Donnen was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Ryder Aman.

Garrett County added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh, making it a 9-6 game.

Buckhannon closed the game to 9-8 after Grant Mealey doubled and later scored on a passed ball and Calef-Boring singled and scored on a ground out by Donnen.

With Ryan Snyder advancing to third base on a pair of ground outs after a single, he was stranded there as Garrett County reliever Tanner Haskiel struck out Drayden Rice for the final out.

Buckhannon collected 10 hits in the loss with Aman, Mealey, Calef-Boring and Donnen each getting two.

Brady Hurst started the game and absorbed the loss in a two-inning effort. He gave up two earned runs on four hits while fanning one.

Two days earlier, Buckhannon Post 7 traveled to Elkins and dropped a 7-3 Area V contest to Post 29. That allowed Elkins to host two of the three games in the Area V Tournament which will begin in Elkins on Tuesday.

The two losses dropped Buckhannon to 10-15 on the year.

They will wrap up their regular season with a home game with Potomac Valley Saturday at 1 p.m. and then a home doubleheader with Charleston Post 65 Junior Legion team Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
