Basketball Lady ‘Cats fall on the road at Charleston, 66-53

CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team extended its winless streak to 10 with a 66-53 loss in Charleston, Wednesday.

After taking a three-point lead into the half and maintaining a close margin well into the third quarter, turnovers (27 total) started getting in the way of continued success. Once Charleston was up by seven with 4:34 to play in the third, the Lady Bobcats could get no closer.

Emma Witt, Wesleyan’s leading scorer (14 points-per-game), posted an 8-of-10 performance for 18 points. Shelby Genes went 6-of-10 for 14 points. Desiree Roy added seven points and seven rebounds. Courtney Wilfong scored six points and pulled down four boards.

Charleston’s leading scorer Clarrissa Francis had a game-high 23 points in an 8-of-11 effort from the floor and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. She handled nine of Charleston’s 28 rebound total.

The Lady Bobcats return to Rockefeller Center for a cold January day matchup with West Virginia State University on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is 2 p.m. Admission is free.
