TENNERTON – With a 10-day break in the schedule, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers didn’t miss a beat in their return to the court Monday night in a non-conference battle with the Parkersburg Big Reds.

The Bucs never trailed in a convincing 64-50 win.

The Bucs were slated to have a week off but that time off was pushed to 10 days when their game with Woodrow Wilson on Saturday was canceled by the snowstorm that hit the area.

The game was also Senior Night for the Bucs.

“I felt we were ready to play,” head coach Jason Westfall said as his team returned to action  after their time away from the court. “We like playing in front of our home crowd. We feed off of their energy and with it being Senior Night, we wanted to do well. We were prepared and we executed. The game was physical, and we like that style.”

Buckhannon-Upshur shot the ball well at 58.2 percent (25-for-43) putting three players in double digits as Carter Zuliani had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Jaden Westfall was a perfect seven-for-seven from the floor for 14 points to go along with eight rebounds while Jerin Westfall added 13 points.

Zuliani put in a basket to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game.

Malaki Williams scored on a putback to treat the Bucs to a 10-7 lead and a Nathaniel Ringer trey put the Bucs up 13-9 as B-U went into the second quarter up 13-11.

Zuliani scored the first four points in the second quarter to open up the B-U lead to six, at 17-11.

Up 18-15, Buckhannon-Upshur went on an 11-0 capped off by a putback by Jaden Westfall.

That gave the Bucs a 29-15 advantage with 2:42 remining in the half.

Parkersburg ended the half with a 9-2 run trimming the B-U lead down to seven at the break, at 31-24.

A dunk from Jerin Westfall put the Bucs up 38-28 at the 4:23 mark of the third quarter

An Ian Strader three-pointer wrapped up the third quarter giving the Bucs a 46-36 lead heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Another trey from Strader put the Bucs up by a 55-40 score with 4:14 left in the contest.

The closest Parkersburg could get was 11 points after a trey by Nate Rodriguez, at 61-50, with a minute remaining.

Landon Marple wrapped up the scoring with a three-pointer for the Bucs with 45 seconds left.

Coach Westfall praised his seniors after the game.

“At the start of the season, we committed ourselves to do whatever it takes to win,” stated Westfall. “The seniors understand that. They each have sacrificed their individual games for the team goal of winning. Their contributions have helped develop our culture. I am proud of the team and especially our senior class. Their impact will ripple through the program in the years to follow.”

Parkersburg was led by Matthew Stalnaker who scored 17 points and Rodriguez who added 10.

The Big Reds fell to 5-15 on the year.

The Bucs won their fourth game in a row and improved to 14-5 on the season.

Buckhannon-Upshur will close out their regular season with a pair of very tough home games on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, they will host Class AAAA No. 2 Morgantown and then on Thursday, they will welcome Class AAA No. 2 East Fairmont.

Both games will start at 7:30 p.m.
