Barbour, Lewis county residents among 11 new COVID deaths reported Friday in West Virginia

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 795 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 14 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (9), Barbour (13), Lewis (8), Randolph (8) and Webster (7) counties. In Upshur County, the number of active cases was unchanged over the last 24 hours. 

Eleven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 81-year old male from Putnam County, a 66-year old male from Kanawha County, a 60-year old male from Fayette County, a 95-year old female from Brooke County, a 76-year old female from Lewis County, a 91-year old female from Barbour County, an 85-year old female from Mason County, a 59-year old male from Kanawha County, a 78-year old female from Mercer County, an 80-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 71-year old female from Monongalia County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 18, 2022, there are currently 795 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 11 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,646 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 239 residents are hospitalized with the virus (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated), with 67 currently in intensive care (61% unvaccinated, 39% vaccinated) and 37 on a ventilator (60% unvaccinated, 40% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 1.89%. 

A total of 966,222 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 418,152 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
